Elias Mpofu

Dr. Elias Mpofu

 Elias Mpofu, PhD, DED, CRC, Affiliate Faculty, Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, is professor and head of discipline of rehabilitation counseling at the University of Sydney, Australia. Formerly professor of rehabilitation services at the Pennsylvania State University, he is recipient of four rehabilitation researcher and education awards by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) (2007), the National Council on Rehabilitation Education (2007, 2010), the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association (2007), and the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (2015). He is associated with several NIH research awards (2008-2013). He is Chair/Convener of the Rehabilitation Psychology Interest Group of the Australian Psychological Society (2014-), and Community-oriented Prevention Science (CoPS) research group at the University of Sydney (2014-).  

Dr. Mpofu is lead editor of Assessment in Rehabilitation and Health (2010: Pearson), and Rehabilitation and Health Assessment Applying ICF guidelines (2010: Springer) both of which are seminal textbooks applying the WHO-ICF to assessment for rehabilitation intervention. He is editor of two leading book titles: Counseling People of African Ancestry (2011: Cambridge University Press), and Community-Oriented Health Services: Practices Across Disciplines (2015) which addresses inclusive health and wellbeing practices in communities with diversity. Dr. Mpofu is Editor of the Australian Journal of Rehabilitation Counselling, Journal of Psychology in Africa, and also Consulting Editor of 8 other journals,  including Psychological Assessment, the flagship assessment journal of the American Psychological Association.

Dr. Mpofu’s research interests coalesce around community-oriented health services design, implementation and evaluation in local and international community settings. He is a study panel member of the NIH/National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (2011-).
