Klawitter named School of Education’s next associate dean for student academic affairs

August 21, 2018

Christina Klawitter was recently named the School of Education’s next associate dean for student academic affairs, a position she is starting on Sept. 24.

In this role, Klawitter will have general oversight and responsibility for student academic affairs and student services units, and activities across the School of Education. She will establish directions, develop policies and procedures, and facilitate coordination and integration among units providing services related to advising, student recruitment, program admission, scholarships and fellowships, and career services.

“We are thrilled that Christina will be joining the School of Education in this important role,” says Dean Diana Hess, the Karen A. Falk Distinguished Chair of Education. “Her unique combination of skills, broad experiences and understanding of UW-Madison make her a great fit for this position.”

Klawitter, who is an alumna of the School of Education and previously worked at UW-Madison for more than a decade, returns to campus after serving as the dean of students at Beloit College since 2011. In this role, she served on the Beloit College president’s senior leadership team and advanced that institution’s learning and teaching mission by leading a 40-person Student Life division and overseeing 11 student services units.

Klawitter also has experience at both Edgewood College and UW-Madison. She was a research advisor for Edgewood’s doctoral program in educational leadership, and also spent time there as a faculty associate and advising community chair.

Klawitter worked from 1998 to 2011 on the UW-Madison campus in various roles, including from 2008-11 as assistant dean for academic progress with the College of Letters and Science’s Undergraduate Academic Services office.

Klawitter earned her Ph.D. in 2007 from UW-Madison’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. She received her master’s degree in 2011 from the School of Education in counseling, with a higher education emphasis. Klawitter holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and legal studies from Beloit College.

“I'm thrilled to be joining the School of Education as a collaborator and leader,” says Klawitter.  “Dean Hess' vision and energy, the quality of the student body and the School's academic programs, and the commitment and warmth I saw in the staff and faculty during my interview were compelling. For me, this is the right role at the right time and I can't wait to get started.”

Klawitter will be taking over for Jeffrey Hamm, who has worked in various academic services roles with the School of Education since 1993 and who has served as its associate dean for student academic affairs since 2006. Hamm’s last day with the School is Sept. 4.
