Graduate Degree Programs

The Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education addresses the life-span educational and rehabilitation needs of persons with disabilities. As the name implies, this department consists of two areas: Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education. Each area offers degree possibilities at the master and doctoral levels.

To apply to the master or doctoral degree programs, you must complete the Graduate School's online application and submit Letters of Recommendation. Click here for additional departmental admissions requirements.

To obtain current information and to receive departmental application forms, please contact the department's student status examiner, Janet Kuehl, at 432 East Campus Mall, Room 132; phone (608) 263-4608; e-mail kuehl@education.wisc.edu

Additional information about graduate programs in Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education may be found in the University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate catalog.

Rehabilitation Psychology

As suggested by the designation of rehabilitation psychology, the focus of study in the Rehabilitation Psychology Area concerns the application of psychology principles to understanding the needs of people with disabilities in rehabilitation settings. Instruction addresses understanding the impact of physical, cognitive, and psychiatric disabilities and providing rehabilitation services such as counseling, assessment, job placement, case management, and advocacy.

Special Education

The Special Education Area provides a master's plus cross-categorical teacher certification program that offers certification in one of three areas: cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, or emotional-behavioral disabilities. A general master's degree program in special education is also available.

The successful completion of a master's degree program is independent of admission to the doctoral program – specific application to the doctoral program is necessary.
