The following scholars have joined our Special Education faculty as assistant professors, starting in Fall 2009.
Aydin Bal, Ph.D., recently completed his Ph.D. in Special Education from Arizona State University. His interests in interdisciplinary research and sociocultural theories focus on developing more complex and dynamic understandings of crucial issues in special education, such as: disproportionate representation of CLD students; inclusion and international and multicultural issues; and equity in learning opportunities and academic outcomes.
Melinda Leko, Ph.D., received her Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Florida where she taught as an assistant scholar. She brings a broad background in training, and university and public school teaching experiences to the Special Education area's initiative to improve educational outcomes for students with high incidence disabilities. She also has an interest in crafting reading instruction that responds to needs of students with high incidence disabilities and English language learners with disabilities.
Wendy Machalicek, Ph.D., BCBA-D, received a Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Texas at Austin and taught as an assistant professor at Portland State University. She has a significant track record of experiences working with children, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities in a variety of settings and has a strong commitment to conducting research and teaching in special education. Her research interests focus on the use of videoconferencing to train teachers and parents to implement interventions to decrease the challenging behaviors of youth with intellectual disabilities and autism.
